Jeffery Salter is a creative soul, but completely eschews the anti-authoritarian stereotypes. He often turns up 4–6 hours early, diligently prepares for each shoot and knows how to get comfortable quickly with different types of people.
Jeffery may have picked up this dedication to preparedness when he worked as a Naval Photographer. He did work for Stars and Stripes magazine in Europe, Navy times, Army times, Air Force times and other military newspapers and magazines. He's used to capturing quality work under pressure. His first job after graduating was to go to Hawaii and hang out of helicopters and planes to take photos of Chinese fishing boats, and in the following years he'd have experience in Africa doing stories about local schools, and shooting at V-day celebrations in Normandy. He grew up on a military base, and developed a love for photography at an early age. The US Navy School of photography was one of the premier schools at the time, so it seemed like a natural fit.
One of his current clients is Sports Illustrated. The Art Director briefed him to create cover for its Best Of series, featuring Julio Jones (the running back for the Falcons) in a 'Sin City Warrior' theme. Jeffery was supposed to be shooting in the Falcons' practice area, outdoors and with natural light, but was instead taken to a white media room, where the lighting was difficult to control. Luckily for him, he had rented more than enough equipment to create a striking image. He's always ready to set the tone of the production and never looses his cool. He advises:
"Make sure to bring enough to the shoot to be flexible and improvise. Be able to change things as they occur. No matter what happens, you still have to create a compelling image or portrait. I’d say prepare for the worst and hope for the best because you're responsible for everything that does or doesn't happen."
Jeffery's plan for this year is to, "be directive and be aware of the images I want to create and do more personal work". He has two foci for personal work. The first is a hauntingly beautiful landscape series, and the second is a series called 'Sublime Explorations' which is a clashing of modernism and renaissance.
